The Reason Why I Never Drink so-called “Mazai”

Energy drinks contain caffeine and shakes off sleepiness. And the manufacturers say that it enables us to wake up and be active even if we are tired and sleepy. Many friends around me drink so-called Mazai or energy drinks. When they want to wake up and do some activities including preparation for exams or writing papers and sometimes just for computer games, they drink Mazai. However, I don’t like it and never drink it because in my opinion, it is so harmful for human body.

Firstly, to my great regret, the main effective ingredient caffeine does not remove fatigue itself. When we feel tired and sleepy, our body and brain have a certain level of fatigue. And the feeling of fatigue and sleepiness is a sign that we should take a rest. However, energy drinks just deceive our brain and remove the feeling of fatigue, and never remove fatigue itself. Thus, our body and brain will remain tired. If we continue the present activities instead of to take a rest, we will add more stress to our body and brain. It may cause various problems. It cannot solve fundamental problems, but just a temporary measure. If we feel fatigue or sleepiness, the only way to solve this problem is to take a rest.

Secondly, human being begun night-time activities only after the invention of electric light bulb by Thomas Edison in 19th century. Before it, human surely had candle or torch. However, there are not so useful because it is not so bright and convenient. Night time was just time to stop activities and sleeping from the beginning of human history to just 200 years ago. Human body have adopted to the day-night cycle for a few million years. It is already a built-in system of human body. When the sun rises on the morning, our brain starts to produce a certain hormone as brightness increases, and when the night comes our brain start to produce another hormone. If we change this rhythm in a short term in just a few hundred years, it will cause some problems (this natural rhythm is developed in a few million years).  A similar example of such kind of maladjustments is obesity. Human being had suffered from starvation from the beginning of its history to just a few hundred years ago. And to store fat effectively while we can eat something is very important and effective survival strategy. However, after industrial revolution and dramatic economic growth, the food supply has improved, and we are taking excessive nutrition. As a result, many people in advanced countries have suffered from obesity. Rapid change in sleeping may cause various problems to human being.

 And thirdly, it is the most serious and actual problem that caffeine is a lethal drug, if we intake excessive caffeine, it will cause death on us. There are already many cases of death caused by excessive intake of energy drinks.

In summary, energy drink is harmful and dangerous for human body, hence I never drink it.
